The story of the Bluebell Railway began in 1882 as the Lewes and East Grinstead Railway (LEGR), quickly becoming part of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) a year later. The museum captures this transition and further explores the progression from horse-drawn railways of the 1600s through to the era of steam locomotives and modern electric trains.

The museum was opened on 23 June 2011 by Lord Faulkner of Worcester, president of the Heritage Railway Association. The museum at Sheffield Park tells the story of the Bluebell Railway, which began as the Lewes and East Grinstead Railway (LEGR) in 1882, being taken over by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) a year later.
It is situated at Sheffield Park station on Platform 2. (There is no extra charge to visit the museum). Many of our visitors can remember travelling on steam trains and a few can even recall being evacuated during the Second World War. Our museum is a wonderful place to re-live these memories. Come and operate the signal box.
Lewes Castle is located centrally in Lewes off the High Street, a few minutes walk from the bus and railway stations. Lewes is easily accessed from the A27, A26 and A275; drivers using the A27 should enter the town from the eastern end of the Lewes by-pass via the Cuilfail Tunnel.
