In O. chrysurus and L. synagris, selective mortality of smaller, slower-growing individuals during the larval stage reduced variability in these traits such that larvae were of similar sizes at settlement.

Dec 20, 2023 · Handfeeding ant larvae with juvenile hormone resulted in larger adult workers after metamorphosis, suggesting a role for socially transferred juvenile hormone in the colony-level regulation of worker size over colony maturation.
May 5, 2018 · We analysed four early life-history traits measured from otoliths (fish ear stones), in the pelagic larval and benthic juvenile stages (Table 1, Fig. 1), to address two key knowledge gaps regarding trait variation in wild populations of organisms with complex life cycles.

Features shared with marine invertebrates of several phyla include rare and ancient origins of feeding larvae, irreversible losses of a feeding larval stage, a constraint on brooding imposed by embryos’ need for oxygen, and possible benefits from slower development of protected embryos.
Jul 1, 2020 · The first part of this volume focuses on the fundamental aspects of crustacean embryonic development. The second part of the book provides an account of the larval phase of crustaceans and describes processes that influence the development from hatching to an adult-like juvenile.
Abstract. The temporal and spatial patterns of larval settlement of the bluehead wrasse, Thalas-soma bifasciatum, were documented in the San Blas Islands of Panama. Daily censuses indicated that larvae settle onto coral reefs in brief episodes that tended to occur around the new moon and peak in intensity between August and December of each year.
