Plot Overview. "King Lear" is set in ancient Britain and tells the story of an aging king who decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. To determine how much of the kingdom each daughter will receive, Lear asks them to publicly declare their love for him.
The Tragedy of King Lear, often shortened to King Lear, is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It is loosely based on the mythological Leir of Britain. King Lear, in preparation for his old age, divides his power and land between his daughters Goneril and Regan, who pay homage to gain favour, feigning love.
Plot Summary. Lear, King of Britain, in an attempt to avoid future strife, divides his kingdom between his three daughters. His eldest two, Regan (wife of Cornwall) and Gonerill (wife of Albany), respond to his request for a show of love, but Cordelia is unable to, not wanting to be hypocritical.
