Dec 10, 2020 · In 'Keeping Mum', Brian Thompson describes such a story. Whilst other children were evacuated out of the big cities, Brian found himself travelling into London, and spent much of the war with an eccentric swarm of relations. Costa Award, 2006.
He's a single parent with an eleven-year-old son, Will, who hasn't spoken since the death of his mother in a car crash fourteen months ago. He's being pursued by a dodgy landlord for unpaid rent and he's just lost his job. Struggling to find work, and desperate for money, Danny decides to do what anyone in his position would do.
Summary: Crystal clear prose, a dry sense of humour and a complete lack of self-pity elevates Keeping Mum from the swollen ranks of the "poor me" memoirs into something that is really quite sublime. Highly recommended.
