About Me. I’m Katya - I’m a children’s writer from London, England. I live with my partner and our two dogs - Raffi is a very old lurcher and Mouse is a little whippet. Before I was a writer I worked in special schools and for social care, as well as running a small charity that put on creative workshops for neurodivergent people.
The Light in Everything. The Light in Everything was selected as a Times Children’s Book of the Year, a Sunday Times and Times Book of the Week, and a 5* Telegraph Children’s Book of the Week. It has been shortlisted for the 2023 Carnegie Medal, the 2023 UKLA Award and the 2023 FCBG Award.

Katya Balen (born 1989) is a British author of children's literature. Her works include The Space We're In (2019), The Light in Everything (2022), and The Thames and Tide Club (2023). Her 2020 novel October, October won the 2022 Carnegie Medal .
