Justice League: War kicked off the New 52 version of the DC Animated Universe, and now the next movie is Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, featuring the go-to source for superhero jokes himself, Aquaman. The movie pulls heavily from Geoff Johns’s New 52 Aquaman comic while making some creative diversions, most notably excising the entire second volume. While the same visual style and on-the-nose characterization from War is still present, this followup doesn’t have as big a scale or as compelling a story.

Wonderfully voiced by Matt Lanter, Arthur Curry is introduced as a normal guy who happens to have gills and the ability to win bar fights thanks to super strength and knife-proof skin. We learn quite a great deal about Arthur’s childhood and his connections to Atlantis before he ever dons the familiar orange and green outfit and starts fighting evil. The Justice League take a back seat to this development, and while it’s nice to get such great story beats for Aquaman’s origin, it sometimes leaves the League’s seven members without something meaningful to do. Justice League might be in the title, but ultimately this is an Aquaman movie.

That might not be so bad if Aquaman’s rise to being a hero was executed a bit better. Cyborg received his origin story during War in outstanding fashion, making him the breakout star of the film. Aquaman isn’t so lucky here. While his beginnings are heartfelt and intriguing, once he journeys to Atlantis he speeds through the Steps To Becoming A Hero so quickly that it’s hard to feel engaged in his story.

He goes from freaking out about being an Atlantean to embracing his destiny in the blink of an eye, and it’s not long until he’s fighting supervillains and giving empowering speeches. It wasn’t too long ago that he was a drunk in a life vest; his transition from zero to hero happens so fast that the audience doesn’t get a chance to get behind the character and root for him.

While the voice acting and animation are as strong as ever, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis makes a few missteps in its introduction to Aquaman. While the story functions as a great primer on who the hero is, his story ultimately isn’t that compelling due to a rushed second half of the film. The Justice League members have some great moments to ...
