Their archive of drawings – covering intricate ship portraits, rapid compositional sketches and even instructional drawings for assistants – would have been their most valuable studio asset, providing the basis for endless paintings.

Mar 6, 2023 · Van de Velde highlights the sinking of HMS Andrew, suggesting this was a Dutch commission – it may have belonged to Tromp’s son. In foreground to the left, on the starboard side of the boat with raised leeboards, van de Velde has depicted himself: in a wide-brimmed hat, busily drawing.

Johannes Josef Van de Velde perished when the Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912. His body, if recovered, was never identified, leaving his family without the closure of a proper burial.
This line, written in Dutch above a rapidly drawn sketch of boats in a heavy sea, is one of dozens of notes, annotations, instructions and inscriptions found on Van de Velde drawings held at Royal Museums Greenwich. Once deciphered, the messages are instantly intriguing.
