Nigel Slater was born on 9 April 1956, [ 1 ] in Wolverhampton, then in Staffordshire. He was the younger of two sons born to factory owner Cyril "Tony" Slater and housewife Kathleen Slater (née Galleymore). This was his father's second marriage. His mother died of asthma in 1965. [ 6 ]
At the age of 18, Jonathan Lovekin’s father gave him his first camera, a Voigtlander. He subsequently embarked upon a photographic course at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, from which he graduated in 1988. and ‘Elle Deco’. ‘Marie Claire’.

The much-loved essays from his kitchen are photographed each week by Jonathan Lovekin. The Diaries and other works Nigel’s recipes are often told as stories, as in his award-winning books Tender, the three-volume Kitchen Diaries and The Christmas Chronicles.
Tender Volume i is published in hardback, is 620 pages long and quarter bound in blue-green linen. It was photograped by Jonathan Lovekin, designed by Sam Blok and set in Adobe Garamond. The book was printed by Legatoria Editoriale Giovanni Olivotto in Vicenza. From the introduction:
