John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, OM PC FRS (/ ˈreɪli /; 12 November 1842 – 30 June 1919) was an English mathematician and physicist who made extensive contributions to science. He spent all of his academic career at the University of Cambridge.
Professor of Natural Philosophy, 1887-1905. Director of the DFRL, 1896-1919. Honorary Professor, 1905-1919. Born in Maldon, he briefly attended both Eton College and Harrow School, but because of ill health was mostly educated at private schools.
John William Strutt (1842-1919), 3rd Baron Rayleigh, was born at Maldon, Essex, on 12 November 1842. He was educated privately and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a Fellow, 1866-1871. He succeeded his father as baron in 1873.

John William Strutt, third Baron Rayleigh, was born on November 12, 1842, and succeeded his father in the title in 1873. He took his B.A. degree at Cambridge in 1865, gradu-ating as Senior Wrangler. The same year he was first Smith's prizeman, and in 1 866 he became a Fellow of Trinity College.
