  1. John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, OM PC FRS (/ ˈreɪli /; 12 November 1842 – 30 June 1919) was an English mathematician and physicist who made extensive contributions to science. He spent all of his academic career at the University of Cambridge.

  5. John William Strutt, third Baron Rayleigh, was born on November 12, 1842, and succeeded his father in the title in 1873. He took his B.A. degree at Cambridge in 1865, gradu-ating as Senior Wrangler. The same year he was first Smith's prizeman, and in 1 866 he became a Fellow of Trinity College.
