John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, OM PC FRS (/ ˈ r eɪ l i /; 12 November 1842 – 30 June 1919) was an English mathematician and physicist who made extensive contributions to science. He spent all of his academic career at the University of Cambridge.
John William Strutt (1842-1919), 3rd Baron Rayleigh, was born at Maldon, Essex, on 12 November 1842. He was educated privately and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a Fellow, 1866-1871. He succeeded his father as baron in 1873.
