The first school for Negroes was opened in 1832 by JOHN MALVIN and was supported by subscription. The Board of Education built its first 2 schoolhouses in 1839-40. The first high school, CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, was opened in 1845, with ANDREW FREESE as principal.
