King John had put his seal on the Magna Carta, as did twenty-five barons, including John de Lacy, who had demanded the King's agreement. Edmund de Lacy, 8th Baron of Pontefract, 9th Baron of Halton, 9th Lord of Bowland, to young to inherit the title Earl of Lincoln.
It is not known when, or how, John died though there is a suggestion he was privately executed to stop him being used as a figurehead by rebels. John of Pontefract, the illegitimate son of Richard III was appointed as Captain of Calais on 11th March 1485.

John had a varied life, amongst other things serving two kings at both home and abroad, was excommunicated by the Pope, and went on crusade for two years.
