Cleveland was born in Loughborough, the son of Thomas Cleveland, Vicar of Hinckley (1620–1652), and educated at Hinckley Grammar School. Admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge, he graduated BA in 1632 and became a fellow of St John's College in 1634, [1][2] where he became a college tutor and lecturer in rhetoric. [1]

The most popular English poet and political satirist in the mid-17th century was John Cleveland, who grew up in Hinckley where his father, Thomas, was the vicar. He was born in Loughborough, Leicestershire in 1613 but the family moved to Hinckley in 1621 after his father's appointment.

Frances Clara Cleveland Preston (née Folsom, christened Frank Clara; July 21, 1864 – October 29, 1947) was the first lady of the United States from 1886 to 1889 and again from 1893 until 1897, as the wife of President Grover Cleveland. She is the only first lady in U.S. history to have served in the role during two non-consecutive terms.
The headmaster at the Grammar School was Richard Vines. Richard Vines wrote against the Anglican establishment in The Civil War period and was present at The Execution of Charles I. Thomas and Elizabeth Cleveland (John's parents) produced a number of children, two of whom died young.
