Castelo Branco is the capital of what used to be the province of Beira Baixa. Located just twenty kilometers from the Spanish border, most of the historical character of Castelo Branco has been destroyed by numerous marauding armies.
Castelo Branco gets its name from the prior existence of a Luso-Roman castrum or fortified settlement called Castra Leuca, on the summit of the hill of Colina da Cardosa. The population grew on the slopes of this hill.
Castelo de Castelo Branco. Much sought after by tourists, what remains of the Albicastrense Castle rises in an area overlooking the city. It was built by the Templars in the Middle Ages, this despite the traces of human presence in that area in pre- and proto-history, having been surrounded by a line of walls and towers.
