Sep 16, 2022 · The Dutch colonial history is well represented in the collections of the British Library. Megan Strutt takes the reader through the Dutch-Surinamese collections via Johan Fretz’s novel ‘Onder de Paramariboom’.
Megan will use Onder de Paramariboom (2018), an award-winning autobiographic novel by the Dutch-Surinamese writer Johan Fretz as a ‘tool’ for navigating the British Library’s maps, images and texts. The collection items will situate Fretz’s novel within a broader historical and visual context.
Last summer, Megan headed to London to dive into the Dutch-Surinamese archives of the British Library, an extensive collection of material related to the former Dutch Colony that, until now, had remained underexposed.

Oct 3, 2020 · In Fretz’s novel, Johannes’ trip to Suriname took him on a journey of self-discovery which also led me through the collections of the British Library. I may not have covered the distance that he did, but Fretz’s narrative certainly made me feel closer to Suriname.
