Jun 8, 2018 · When writers contemplate the character of George Washington, they often quote Napoleon Bonaparte, who is supposed to have uttered the line “They wanted me to be another Washington.” The general who became a dictator and lost his empire reflects ruefully on the general who could have assumed a kingship, but did not.
While Napoleon was known for his ambitious military conquests and establishment of a vast empire in Europe, Washington is remembered for his leadership during the American Revolutionary War and his role as the first President of the United States.
Napoleon has Washington's whole career to draw on, while Washington had only the beginning of the latter. We certainly can say he knew of the man. Napoleon made the news for his doings as a military leader, before being First Consul, and his actions even directly impacted Washington's life.
The affair, however, did reveal that Washington had, temporarily at least, lost control of his command and, without much thought, allowed an encounter with the French to become a scene of violence. Read the 1754 Journal of Major George Washington.
