The site, also known as White Haven, commemorates the life, military career and presidency of Ulysses S. Grant.

The Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site encompasses five historic structures -- with exhibits -- from the core of a 850-acre plantation owned by General Grant. The personal life and the partnership with his wife, Julia Dent Grant, provide the context for understanding his military leadership as Union general during the Civil War and his subsequent presidency.
Aug 2021. In order to see the house you need to have guide take you to the gate. Our guide told us the history about Ulysses S. Grant and the home before the self-guided tour into the house. We enjoyed it all. There is also a museum that you can check out either before or after you see the house. All is free.

On a crisp fall day in 1928, a reporter for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat traveled to south St. Louis County. The reporter had come to visit White Haven, the historic childhood home of First Lady Julia Dent Grant, temporary residence of future general and president Ulysses S. Grant and his family, and an antebellum slave planation overseen by Julia’s father, Frederick Dent.
