May 29, 2018 · There were a myraid of issues with Retro initially. Founder Jeff Spangenberg was barely present, those initial projects had barely progressed after nearly two years of development, the team had a lack of access to GameCube development kits, and there were plenty of management issues.
Acclaim's defense attorneys denied Spangenberg's allegations. Jeff believed that Acclaim was attempting to cut management and costs by eliminating himself and any future obligations to him. "Acclaim had also been on a mission to cut entrepreneurial managers in their acquired units and replace them with more corporate types," he claimed.

What you are about to read is the story of Retro Studios, the acclaimed Texas-based developer behind the Metroid Prime titles. Within the span of seven years, this small developer not only breathed new life into one of Nintendo's long dormant franchises, but also made waves across the gaming industry with its innovative designs and spectacular artistic talents.
In 2001, then-president Jeff Spangenberg sold his share of stock in the company to Nintendo and left shortly thereafter. In 2003, Michael Kelbaugh was named president of Retro Studios.
