Jean Cayrol (French: [kɛʁɔl]; 6 June 1911 – 10 February 2005) was a French poet, publisher, and member of the Académie Goncourt born in Bordeaux. He is perhaps best known for writing the narration in Alain Resnais 's 1955 documentary film, Night and Fog.

Jean Cayrol (born June 6, 1911, Bordeaux, France—died February 10, 2005, Bordeaux) was a French poet, novelist, and essayist, who stood at the frontiers of the New Novel (nouveau roman), the avant-garde French novel that emerged in the 1950s.

Jun 23, 2003 · Cayrol had been a prisoner at Mauthausen, and in 1946 had written about his experience in Poèmes de la nuit et brouillard (hence the title of Resnais’ documentary). After shooting on location at Auschwitz and Majdanek, Resnais assembled an initial version of the film in the late autumn of 1955.
