    • M&S Extra Hot Chilli - Medium spicy with a nice front kick. Full review HERE.
    • Morrison’s Ghost Chilli Sauce – Hot but probably one of the worst hot sauces we’ve ever tasted – Full review HERE.
    • Mahi Scorpion and Passion Hot Pepper Sauce – Medium hot, a little thin but tasty enough. link to full review – HERE. (Also check out their Carolina Reaper and Pineapple and Bhut Jolokia Pepper sauces that look promising from the ingredients lists)
    • Sainsbury’s - Scotch Bonnet & Habanero – Medium hot, very vinegary and devoid of much flavour, nice instant heat though.
    • The Hot Sauce Emporium. This shop is a lot of fun. From the tongue in cheek slogan “Your pain is our pleasure” to the mascot “Dr. Burnörium” they’ve embraced the sense of humour that’s so prevalent through-out hot sauce culture.
    • Hot Headz. Hot headz caters to the more “I just want to feel the pain” chilli head. However, beyond the normal sauces they have a lovely range of spice related products like death nuts and gift sets that makes this a good destination for people looking to buy a gift for a chilli maniac.
    • Amazon. We’ve all heard of Amazon, but is it any good for buying hot sauce? The answer is yes and no. It’s the biggest online marketplace in the world so YES you can get hold of an amazing range from all over the world, but if you’re looking for a bargain this isn’t the place to go.
    • One Stop Chilli Stop. One Stop Chilli Shop is the retail trading arm of Chilli Mash Company. For this reason it doesn’t provide the biggest range but there are a few smaller challenger brands that these guys give a great platform.
  2. On Sunday, 13th October, we'll be joined by five special guest judges. Each judge will be tasked with ranking five hot sauces based on three key features that we believe make a standout sauce: heat balance, flavour, and artwork. They'll rate each one from 1 to 5 in these categories.

    • The Rib Man’S Holy F*ck
    • Fred Smith’s Hot Sauce For Byron
    • Grant Hawthorne’s African Volcano
    • Mama Lan’S Chilli Oil
    • Tsuru’s ‘Eat The Bits’ Chilli Oil

You’ve heard of this one, right? No? Where have you been? Mark Gevaux is an ex-butcher turned rib-roll-slinger who took up hot sauce production. His customers couldn’t get enough of the sauce at his Brick Lane rib stand, so he now sells four varieties. The original Holy F*ck is so named because, well, you can probably guess that it doesn’t pull any...

A new player on the hot sauce scene this one, from Fred Smith, development chef and all-round burger genius at the Byron restaurant chain. We know that this hot sauce has been a while in the making, and it’s great to see it finally hit the tables. You’ll find the flavour of fire-roasted red peppers, plus a chilli bang of red chillies, arbol chilli ...

Originally from South Africa, the now-London-based chef Grant Hawthorne makes three different strengths of hot sauce under the brand name African Volcano. For more than 15 years he has been tweaking his recipe, which was gifted to him by a lady from Mozambique. These excellent sauces are, in Grant’s words, about “flavour first, heat second.” He use...

OK so this is a chilli oil rather than a sauce, but we’re allowing it on the grounds of extreme tastiness. You’ll also have to order the fried chicken at Mama Lan’s Beijing street food restaurants in order to experience it, but that is no great hardship. When they say the wings are ‘crispy’, they’re not kidding. This has to be the best chicken skin...

And while we’re talking about chilli oils, this is a gorgeous example from the sushi chain Tsuru. As you may have guessed from the name, it’s the ‘bits’ that make this oil special. There are chilli flakes (duh), plus shichimi togarashi, a Japanese spice mix made with orange peel, sesame seeds and...yep, it’s more chilli. Together with garlic, onion...
