Alveston was the home of the playwright J B Priestley and his wife Jacquetta Hawkes, who lived at Kissing Tree House in the village, in his later years, until his death in 1984. [3] The house was called Avonmore in the 1901 census and his secretary lived in Avonmore Cottage which is still there in Kissing Tree Lane.
In 1953 John was divorced by Jane and married the archaeologist and writer Jaquetta Hawkes. The marriage was very happy. In 1959 they set up home in Alveston near Stratford-on-Avon. The house, name Kissing Tree was their home until John’s death there on 13 th August, 1985
