Isabella Stewart Gardner (April 14, 1840 – July 17, 1924) was an American art collector, philanthropist, and patron of the arts. She founded the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Gardner possessed an energetic intellectual curiosity, a love of travel, and, most importantly, money.

Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from Albert Besnard, Paris for 2,000 francs around April 1892, after she saw it at the eighth annual Société de Pastellistes Français show at Galerie Georges Petit, Paris.

Martin Schongauer - The Virgin and Child of the Rose Bower, mid 16th century. This vertical oil painting depicts the Virgin and Child in the setting of a rose garden. In this scene, the medium-light skinned Virgin, wearing a flowing red cape over a red gown, sits on what appears to be a ledge.
This vertical portrait portrays a woman dressed in black, holding a single rose. The light-skinned woman is shown from the waist up and turned slightly towards our left. Her thin, dark eyebrows are slightly raised, and her blue eyes look out at us. Her pink lips are closed.
Isabella Stewart Gardner’s museum, with its plain exterior enfolding an astonishing four-story Italian palazzo, rose from Boston’s Fens at the turn of the twentieth century. Its treasures encompassed not only masterwork paintings but tapestries, rare books, prints, porcelains, and fine furniture.
