Previously, VMware Fusion couldn’t automatically download and install Windows 11 because it didn’t have a licensing agreement with Microsoft for Windows ARM but that now seems to have been resolved.

    • Parallels Desktop. Yearly update cycle. Can choose a perpetual license or subscription. Easy to install the ARM version of Windows 11. Cons. Price increase in 2022.
    • VMware Fusion. Fusion Player is free for personal, home and student use. Fusion supports the M-series chips. Cons. VMware doesn't update Fusion as regularly as Parallels is updated.
    • Windows 365 Cloud PC. Can run Windows on your Mac and also your iPad or iPhone. Cons. Needs a fast – and always on – Internet connection. Expensive.
    • CrossOver. 14-day trial. Doesn’t require a full version of Windows. Improved interface and ease of use. Cons. Intel only (M1 support is via Rosetta).

  5. Parallels is easily the best (it's paid though). UTM is just as good as Parallels (if you're willing to sacrifice some performance). Linux runs like a charm and Windows isn't that bad either. Fusion sucks, don't use it. Lastly, Virtualbox doesn't run on Apple Silicon Macs.
