Jul 6, 2023 · As a ballet student, choosing the right ballet method that aligns with your goals, learning style, and aspirations is crucial. The most prominent ballet methods that are globally recognised and respected are the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), the Cecchetti method and Vaganova method.
They might use a ballet base with modern/contemporary dynamics, or use a classical ballet form, but exaggerate it to create a post classical style, or use classically trained dancers in a work that uses both modern and classical techniques, or combine modern dancers with ballet dancers in the same work.
- History. As its title implies, modern dance came long after the more traditional ballet. Ballet was exclusively performed for members of high society during the Italian Renaissance period, when this style first emerged.
- Style. One of the most significant differences between ballet and modern dance is the different styles of movement associated with these two dances. Ballet is well known for its preciseness and association with elegance.
- Training. As often depicted in pop culture, ballet requires a highly demanding training schedule. To perfect the traditional movements that are widely celebrated in the world of ballet, performers must train for years, putting the body through challenges such as restrictive clothing and foot injuries.
- Clothing. When we imagine a ballet dancer, an image of a performer with tightly slicked back hair, a leotard, satin shoes, and a tutu often comes to mind.
