Rum and tobacco imported from exotic locations were stored here in great brick buildings, the size the world had never seen before. The docks at the mouth of the Mersey River, including Stanley Dock, pioneered modern dock technology, transport and port management.

The spectacular Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse is a grade II listed building. At the time of its construction in 1901, it was reported to be the world’s largest brick warehouse, made from 27 million bricks and standing 125 feet high. It is a city landmark by virtue of its massive scale.
Situated at the historic site of Stanley Dock, the Titanic Hotel keeps many of the original bricks and iron features that were once there. Opening back in 1848, Stanley Dock was once home to several Tobacco and Rum Warehouses and was, in fact, a busy hub for international trade.
