The numbers decrease even further after that to the point where 1990s and 2000s newsstand editions can be considered rare or even scarce comics.

Oct 2, 2022 · We would have no high grades of newsstand comics, or even high grades of any books from pre-1979 if there weren’t collectors out there who cared about the condition of comics. However, the vast majority of newsstand comics didn’t survive and those that did are less likely to be in high grade.
Unsold Newsstand editions were in most cases destroyed. What we don't know for sure is what percentage of books were printed as newsstand and direct each year. However, its safe to assume that there was a gradual ramp up in direct production as the 1980's progressed into the 1990s.
