"One of the most powerful works of Swedish movie making in the last 20 years. Sven (Stellan Skarsgård in his breakthrough role) plays a simple man who is adopted by a cruel landlord. Set in the '30s, this film offers stellar performances by the cast, beautiful cinematography and flawless editing.
Overview. The feeble-minded Sven's mother dies and he gets work as a farm-hand at the rich, affluent Höglund's farm. He has to work without pay and sleeps together with the cows. He meets the disabled Anna who is the first one to treat him as an adult. One day he has had enough of Höglund's maltreatment and moves in with Anna's family.
The simple-minded murderer expertly crafted a simplistic storyline of horrific wealthy businessmen against an honest feeble-minded Sven was a harrowing experience. Stellan Skarsgård's magnificent bittersweet performances brung a purity to the oppression the character is forced to suffer.
