  1. Regarding difficulty and dryness: Tolkien thought a really good fantasy book should read like history, and that means giving attention to lineages, who migrated where, names and so on. A good bit of detail then is given here as the elves, once they are created, migrated into various parts of the world. Dwarves come next, and humans last.

  4. May 27, 2017 · My Rating: 5/5. The Silmarillion by is an in-depth summary of the creation of Arda and the events that passed during the first, second, and third ages of Middle-earth. The history of this world that J. R. R. Tolkien has built is wonderfully complex so The Silmarillion is a perfect starting point for anyone who wants to learn its history.

  6. Mar 23, 2021 · Growing up, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings was one of the first classic epic fantasies that I ever read.I read the books out of order–trilogy first, The Hobbit second–though that was entirely because my father wanted to see the movies in the theater, so he handed me The Fellowship and told me to get reading so I could join him.
