May 27, 2020 · The Little Friend in a nutshell. The book tells the story of Harriet, a 12-year old girl living in Mississippi in the 1970s. The girl's experiences makes The Little Friend very much a coming-of-age story. Like Tartt herself, intelligent, outcast Harriet loves reading books and is particularly influenced by classics such as Robert Louis Stevenson 's Treasure Island .
