Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits.
At the party in the apartment near the beginning, Nick (Toby Maguire) is in the foreground while we hear his inner monologue about his existential paradox - feeling "within and without," an outsider and a participant. But he's also seen in the background partying.
It was smart of the screenwriters to stick so closely to the language of the book. Fitzgerald's prose finds its way into the movie via the narrator, Nick, and much of the dialogue is lifted straight from the novel. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it.) You can actually watch the film while reading along with the book.
