      • Like no other book, The Forever War allows us a visceral understanding of today’s battlefields and of the experiences of the people on the ground, warriors and innocents alike. It is a brilliant, fearless work, not just about America’s wars after 9/11, but ultimately about the nature of war itself.

  2. Starship Troopers is also a good read which delves into war and its effects pretty well (ignore the movie, which is much different). Of course, the "sequel" to Forever War is Forever Peace which has a much different tone but I'd recommend giving it a go just to see how you feel about it.

  6. Read it for the first time this year and it may be one of my favorite science fiction books of all time. It has a unique world, characters that you want to see survive and succeed, and allegories that feel just as relevant today as they did in the 1970's.

  7. Apr 3, 2002 · An epic SF war story spanning relativistic space and time, The Forever War explores one soldier's experience as he is caught up in the brutal machinery of a war against an unknown and unknowable alien foe that reaches across the stars.

  8. Oct 10, 2014 · In 1976, the year after the Vietnam War ended, The Forever War won the Hugo, Nebula and Locus Awards for Best Novel—the first, Haldeman joked, MFA thesis from the University of Iowa to do so. The Forever War is transparently an autobiographical retelling of Haldeman's wartime experiences.
