The Cambridgeshire Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile and 1 furlong (1,811 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late September.
Oct 1, 2024 · The Cambridgeshire Handicap is renowned for its large fields and unpredictable outcomes. As a handicap race, each horse is assigned a weight based on its official rating. This system levels the playing field, making it difficult to predict the winner, which in turn creates excellent betting opportunities for punters.
Sep 24, 2024 · Held on the final day of Newmarket’s three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting, this handicap is still one of the biggest field races of the season. Formerly with Sir Michael Stoute, six-year-old Astro King came right back to form last time with a big-race win at York. He’s been penalised 5lbs for that win which on its own isn’t enough to stop him, but another step forward is needed which isn’t guaranteed at this stage of his career.
William Knight’s five-year-old was on quite a bad run of results, at least on paper, but he comes into this as a last-time-out winner having scored at Sandown earlier in the month. That was an easy win and a career high, so assuming he can repeat the feat or better it then he has bang in with a chance here.
This is the big gamble for Harry and Roger Charlton. Owned by Juddmonte, Greek Order has successfully stayed 1m2f which is good for a Cambridgeshire contender and he is undoubtedly well ahead of the handicapper. Surely a Group horse, the son of Kingman won nicely in May on only his second start but was even more impressive last time out at Newbury....
Karl Burke brings down three-year-old Liberty Lane for a crack at this race and he might just go very close. He won over a mile last time out but that was on soft ground, he is by Teofilo and he did well enough over 1m2f on only his second start so the distance may play to his strengths. On known form he’s not certain to be at his best on this grou...
Jack Channon’s Majestic is well versed in these major betting handicaps. Fourth in three very valuable handicaps this year, he looks as though at five the handicapper has him but he is also extremely reliable for each-way punters, especially with extra places on offer.
Sheikh Ahmed’s young three-year-old, trained by Ed Walker, is lightly raced, going the right way and keenly priced in the market. After a solid if unspectacular start, he won by some nine lengths at Nottingham in June and followed up over a mile at Newmarket next time out. He was well beaten at York last time over a mile, but gave the impression he...
