It's a love story in the midst of a war, that much is clear -- so it's juxtaposing the lovey-dovey of a teenage romance and the grittiness of a huge tragedy. But I'm trying to think about all the little themes, threads, and storylines here.
Saekano is actually a fairly hard series for this question. It's superficially similar to several harem series but it's differentiated in a big way because of the setting and subtle way it handles the romance. Oregairu is the closest to it, although I'm personally not a fan of it.
