ROF bridges the gap between opera and cinema. It’s literally an opera, although one that could never be staged in its complete form. It requires the technology of cinema to be executed to its full vision, but the solid operatic basis is there nonetheless.
The powerful pharaoh Usermare evokes the spirit of Ernest Hemingway and engages Norman's three incarnations in a struggle for dominance. In a parallel narrative, River of Fundament replaces the body of Norman with the body of an automobile in the American landscape.

Feb 12, 2014 · The film was inspired by Norman Mailer’s 1983 novel, Ancient Evenings, set in ancient Egypt and invested in stages of reincarnation that come after death. The story would not seem to be eminently filmable. But River of Fundament is not exactly a film.
