It was created to be a replacement sequel for Ring, as the actual sequel Rasen was a box office bomb. A prequel, Ring 0: Birthday, was released in 2000. The movie is based on the short story "Lemon Heart" from Suzuki's 1999 book, Birthday (the fourth book in the series).
Sadako (2019) is a sequel to Ring 2. So you end up with two different chronologies that look something like this: Ring->Rasen>Sadako 3D->Sadako 3D2 Ring->Ring 2->Sadako (2019)
