   I know a lot of people liked the American remake, but to me it was just too much. Scenes like the horse on the barge crossed the line into unintentionally funny. But everyone has their own preferences, and The Ring is a good movie in its own right. I loved Juon as well, but Ringu is the movie that I frequently go back and rewatch.

   Ringu is and always shall be my favourite film of all time. I get that the books are meant to be good, but the introduction of [SPOILER ALERT] the video giving Small Pox just confused me. The film on the other hand is superb, despite feeling slightly western when compared to other J-Horror, it's a standard that I love.

   The Ring is much slicker production-wise, and has what I think are some really effective scares (which is what I want in a horror movie). Ringu is much tighter plotwise and comes as a very nice little package - for example, you can track every shot in that cursed video to another scene in the movie.

   • I've always seen it as Ringu (1998) is more of a Supernatural Mystery than straightforward Horror. The Ring (2002) leans more towards Horror. I like them both, although I do prefer Ringu for it's better effects. It think it comes down to which one you fell in love with first. You already loved the original so the remake had no chance.

   • Ring put the willies up me, big time. If you don't mind, I'm off to the corner of my office to curl into a fetal position and rock slowly. Ringu has a minimalist intensity that can stop the heart with a simple flash-cut or a well-timed fillip in the musical score. As good as The Ring is, it can't top the original for sheer, shivering terror.

   Is Ringu 2 a good remake?

   • Ringu 2 is just as good imo. I just love the PNW setting in the remake. Indeed, the remake is a superb example of the cases where the people behind the remake clearly grasp exactly why the original is great - but then they proceed to alter or even destroy those elements deliberately.

   Is Ringu 2 better than the original?

   • It's far more eerie and unknowable than the remake. The remake just over-explains everything and turns it into a basic procedural ghost story. The original has a sense of vague, Lovecraftian implications to the story. It's a far more affecting work. Ringu 2 is just as good imo. I just love the PNW setting in the remake.
