In K-PAX, there are two possible explanations: Prot is crazy. He is truly an alien. There are facts that indicate 1, but also 2. Examples: He seems to respond to hypnosis, has a sort of phobia of water, looks just like his friend and doesn't physically leave.
He’s an alien. He visited Robert as a kid a few times by using his body. When he leaves to go back to K-PAX, Robert is mentally gone. Prot has the memories because he’s using Robert’s body which still has triggers and dramas. When Prot returns home the body is left the way he found it previously.
