Designed by Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, the original design was born during their late night brainstorm sessions.
Jul 17, 2024 · Thorgerson and Powell are most well-known for their extensive work with Pink Floyd, but the pair also designed many other famous album covers, including Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy and more. The Dark Side of the Moon album cover was the one that truly made Hipgnosis famous, though, and the meaning of that prism has been debated far and wide ever since the day of the album’s release.
The design was inspired by a photograph of a prism with a beam of white light projected through it and emerging in the colours of the visible spectrum that Thorgerson had found in a 1963 physics textbook, [50] as well as by an illustration by Alex Steinweiss, the inventor of album cover art, for the New York Philharmonic's 1942 performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Emperor Concerto.
