McGough wrote the lyrics for many of the group's songs and also recorded the musical comedy/poetry album McGough and McGear. McGough was also responsible for much of the humorous dialogue in The Beatles' animated film, Yellow Submarine, although he did not receive an on-screen credit.

Among other things, the poem shows how Nash can turn nouns into verbs – or, more specifically, common idioms for drinking (bottoms up) into verbs.
His most famous poem, On the Ning Nang Nong, was voted the UK's favourite comic poem in 1998 in a nationwide poll, ahead of other nonsense poets including Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear.
