Of all the big-ish town in France (except Paris, but that's another subject) that I've been to, or lived in, Nantes is by far the least boring one. Tons of cultural activities, close to Paris (2h by train), close to the sea, close to brittany if you want to hike in awesome places.

Lived there for 7 years. Nantes is like a little Paris but is 30~50% cheaper. There is usually no security issue so don’t trust the medias. Try to leave downtown near Place Graslin if you can. You don’t have the choices you can get in a lot of big cities for food though.
