Based on a novel by Werner Jörg Lüddecke, it is a cynical, anti-war movie, made during a time when the US government was in the midst of its war campaign against Vietnam. This may explain a bit the audiences' response, but does not justify the bad service of the film guides.

Overall, Morituri is a well made World War II drama featuring two great performances from Marlon Brando and Yul Brynner. The Blu-ray release from Twilight Time features great video and audio transfers though the bonus material was lacking.
