Aug 2, 2015 · This children's classic, first published in 1898, tells the story of John Trenchard, a fifteen year old orphan, who lives with his spinster aunt in the Dorset coastal village of Moonfleet, named after the Mohunes who were the original lords of the manor.
They have three children, including their first-born son, Elzevir. The children grow up, the sons going away to "serve King George on sea and land" while their daughter too, it seems, has married away.
Including one terrifying coffin, one of the spookiest graveyard scenes in fiction and a thrilling chase across a crumbling cliffside, this is an exhilarating and chilling story capturing all the excitement and terror of smuggling.
