Monogatari is a character-driven story about Araragi Koyomi, an ex-vampire who encounters several people afflicted by supernatural problems. These problems come from Oddities -- spirits based on the Shinto religion -- and Araragi tries to help others solve them.
The Monogatari series, overall, is really good but like others have said it’s one of those shows that’s really polarizing for a few reasons. I’ll try to avoid spoilers. First, it has lots of fan service that borders on being really explicit at times.
The story has one of the best developed romances in anime. Despite starting out as a "harem" setting, the main character falls in love with one woman in the first season and stays loyal to her. Monogatari series has a lot of dark satire which puts a lot of people off.

Some fans may be wondering where exactly these things come from. It's simple: they come from humanity believing in them. Maybe that's too simple, but it is the truth. Oddities are apparitions spa...

For audiences who need a consistent protagonist to follow and attach themselves to, they might have some trouble getting into this series. This might confuse viewers and have them wondering just who this show is ab...
Throughout the series, there are some notable and noticeable differences in style that occur over the course of the series. There is a reason for that. The beginning of the first season saw Tatsuya Oishi appointed as the director. He was replaced for the second season by Tomoyuki Itamura and Akiyuki Shinbo, but wound up returning to the series to d...
In all fairness to the show and cast, this series has a lot of folks with– for lack of a better word– colorful names that lack a certain subtlety. We get characters like Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade and Tropicalesque Home-A-Wave Dog-Strings running amok in all their glory. As with most works of fiction, we can blame the writer on this ...
You may have noticed that the Monogatari series basically has a different name for each season. While the entire Monogatari franchise is binded by the same overarching stories, all of these seasons fall under different names other than Monogatari, like Nisemonogatari andKizumonogatari. The reason for that is because the word monogatariliterally tra...
Some viewers may have noticed how there are some drastic color changes during certain scenes in the anime. It's clear that this is a deliberate choice, but a deliberate choice to do what? A bunch of stuff, actually. Color grading could suggest a long range of story techniques for the viewer. A change in lighting for certain characters may be made t...
If you tried to finish the Bakemonogataripart of the series and don't live in Japan, you may have noticed that there are only 12 episodes available– yet there are still three episodes that need to be seen before the season is over. This is one of the drawbacks from the fact that the story of Monogataridoes not actually start at the very beginning, chronological wise. When we first learn that Koyomi Araragi is a half vampire, said detail is delivered as more of a tidbit than anything with an actual explanation. To watch in chronological order, or release order? It's like asking if you should watch Mementoforwards or backwards. The answer is somewhat subjective. On one hand, watching it in chronological order spoils the fun of the confusion and shock. Then again, there isn't much fun about being confused. It's all up to the viewer, but for those wondering ...
