People watch Martyrs only expecting violence and a gorefest and then get disappointed. But the horror of Martyrs isn’t just the violence but the emotional aspect of it. It’s so depressing, nihilistic, dark and cruel to its characters. That’s what makes the violence more visceral and hard-hitting, instead of just being a mindless gore movie.
Martyrs is one of few horror movies that left me with an absolute sense of emptiness once it was over. I wasn't prepared for the ending because of the cliche beginning scenes with the monster reminiscent of asian horror movie ghosts. I didn't know what to expect since I didn't know a single thing about it.

Aug 11, 2023 · Martyrs is a very strange and shocking movie. Director Pascal Laugier knew what he was doing when writing and filming the film. He extracts very good performances from his actors, especially regarding the kids in the film and the two main characters. The character of Mademoiselle has also become an iconic villain in the horror genre.
