  3. My favorite film version of Macbeth would have to be with McKellen and Judi Dench. It's a bit old by now, but it really hits all the criteria you laid out. McKellen is the best Macbeth that I have ever seen if you want the one from the original text. Polanski's from the 70s would be my second pick.
