The first settlements of what is today Ludwigshafen date back until AD 800. Since 1859 Ludwigshafen is officially a city. In the year 1925, Ludwigshafen was declared big city. In 1865, the chemical company BASF – colloquially also called Anilin - was founded in Ludwigshafen.
Ludwigshafen am Rhein (lōōt´vĬkhs-hä´fən äm rīn) or Ludwigshafen, city (1994 pop. 168,130), Rhineland Palatinate, W Germany, a port on the left bank of the Rhine River. It is connected by bridge with Mannheim, on the opposite shore of the Rhine.
