While this road trip movie isn't as good as Thelma and Louise, it really shouldn't be compared. The two films are very different. While Thelma and Louise are on the run the police, Mary Ann and Darly (the two main characters of Leaving Normal) are only on the run from themselves.

May 12, 1992 · On the whole, "Leaving Normal" is just a low-rent "Thelma & Louise" . . . without the guns. It has potential as a parable of survival in the '90s but never fulfills its promise as directed by Edward Zwick ("Glory") and written by Edward Solomon (the "Bill & Ted" movies).
Darly, a waitress with a past that's weighing her down, decides to drive to Alaska to try and come to terms with her unfortunate history. Along the way, she meets Marianne, an impulsive young woman leaving an abusive relationship.
Because both women have made bad choices all their lives, they decide to leave their futures to chance, and end up finding their nirvana. Plot is similar to “Thelma & Louise,” but “Leaving Normal” doesn't come close to the innovativeness of the former.
