Earlier this summer, director James Wan delivered a surprise horror hit with The Conjuring, and now the filmmaker has debuted Insidious Chapter 2, the much anticipated haunted house sequel to 2011's Insidious, co-written by Leigh Whannell and featuring the original cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey and Ty Simpkins.

Picking up right where the first movie left off, Insidious Chapter 2 finds the Lambert family wearily reunited after Josh (Wilson) ventured into the Further to retrieve his son Dalton (Simpkins). However, the hauntings continue to occur, and Josh doesn't seem to be quite himself anymore. Soon, Josh's wife Renai (Byrne) and his mother Lorraine (Hershey) enlist the help of paranormal investigator Carl (Steve Coulter) and ghost hunters Tucker (Angus Sampson) and Specs (Whannell).

In the first Insidious, Wan and Whannell's story was mostly centered around the Lambert family, as Josh and Renai focused on getting their son back. Here, there's more of a mystery element, and the ensemble is basically split into two core groups for most of the film. In one camp is Josh, Renai and the Lambert kids, who continue to experience demonic encounters and various bumps in the night -- much like the first film. In the other camp, there's Lorraine, Carl, Tucker and Specs, who investigate a decades-old mystery surrounding the "Bride in Black." Their journey is more about following leads, uncovering secrets and sussing out the paranormal entities that torment them.

As a result, Insidious 2 is a bit cheesier than Insidious. Yes, it is a direct sequel, but tonally speaking, it feels very different from the first film. Instead of building tension and creating atmosphere, this movie dives right in with plenty of jump scares and terminology-laden dialogue. Likewise, the ghosts themselves are slightly more exaggerated, both in their appearance and their behavior. Simply put, Insidious 2 isn't so much a sequel to Insidious as it is the last 30 minutes of Insidious.

James Wan and Leigh Whannell's Insidious Chapter 2 fully delivers in terms of exploring the mysteries left behind in the previous installment, while also expanding on its intriguing mythology. However, the sequel also embraces the first film's quirkier, campier aspects, which makes for a few good laughs, but also some less-than-terrifying horror se...
