It was a pretty good movie but Rosamund Pike did not give an Oscar-worthy performance. The crying scene was pretty embarassing. I think it may be part due to the director but she ranged from annoyingly mediocre in the first act to decent to good in the later acts, but that’s it.

christian bale hands down nailed his role in hostiles. Scott cooper has always been a good director but, you're right, bale took it to another level. the nest of actors just added more depth & each one brought something unique to the table.
"Hostiles" is described as a revisionist western starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike. I really recommend it as a superb film - heart rending and gripping to up until the last scene. Bale, who is noted for immersing himself in character plays a hardened, brutalised veteran of the Indian Wars.
