This day in 1945, Hildesheim, one of Germany’s oldest and most beautifully preserved historic cities, was bombed by the RAF to destroy industries and railway facilities. Nearly the entire historical city centre was destroyed.

Bombing of Hildesheim in World War II. The German city of Hildesheim, c. 30 kilometres south of Hanover, was the target of eight Allied air raids in 1944 and 1945 and suffered considerable bomb damage.
